Brief bio |
Dr. Skender Syla has been working at the World Health Organization (WHO) for over 21 years. Prior to his appointment in Kazakhstan, he served as WHO Representative in Bulgaria (2017–2022), Head of the WHO Pristina Office (2009–2016), and between 2000 and 2005 held various regional positions as a National Professional Officer, contributing to post-conflict recovery and the development of country-level health systems. He also worked at the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen. Before joining WHO, he worked with the humanitarian organization Mother Teresa (1996–1998) and the International Medical Corps (1998–2000) as a physician in the Western Balkans, participating in various humanitarian response programs supporting people affected by crises. Dr. Syla had a prominent role in catalysing policy development through informed social and health policy options and technical cooperation towards building sustainable health system in Bulgaria in light of European Programme of Work, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Global Agenda (Agenda 2023) and COVID-19 response. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pristina, and holds a Master’s degree in International Health from the University of Copenhagen. |
