Professor Waqar Ahmad is the President of Nazarbayev University (NU), the leading research-intensive university in Central Asia. Under his leadership, NU has advanced its global standing, rising 100 places to the 401–500 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. Before joining NU, Professor Ahmad served as Chancellor (President) of Abu Dhabi University (2017–2023), leading it to a top-300 position in the Times Higher Education global rankings. A Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK), he has held senior academic and leadership roles at the University of Bradford, University of York, University of Leeds, and Middlesex University, where he also served as Deputy Vice Chancellor. Beyond academia, Professor Ahmad has contributed to national and international research and policy development, serving on the boards of the Economic and Social Research Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and NHS R&D, and as Chief Social Scientist in the UK Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. He also holds visiting professorships at the London School of Economics (Social Policy) and the University of York (Sociology). |
